CAN EXERCISE PHYSIOLOGY HELP WITH MUSCULOSKELETAL CONDITIONS?

Exercise Physiology and physio can help with treatment and rehabilitation of a wide range of musculoskeletal disorders including:

Head and Cervical Spine

There are many types of head and cervical injury, pain, discomfort and conditions that your physiologist can assist with, including:

  • Osteoarthritis - Although there is currently no cure for osteoarthritis (OA), treatment from an exercise physiologist can provide pain relief, improve function and help with management of the condition.

  • Tinnitus - The cause of tinnitus can sometimes be associated with musculoskeletal issues, which respond well to exercise physiology treatment.

Upper Limb (Elbow, Shoulder, Wrist, Hand)

Your exercise physiologist can help you with injury recovery and pain relief associated with major upper limb joints and muscle groups, including:

  • Hand & Wrist - Treatment for musculoskeletal pain caused by trauma, repetitive strain injury or other health conditions.

  • Rotator Cuff/Shoulder - Damage to tendons or muscles in the shoulder/rotator cuff area can cause significant pain and inconvenience to many everyday tasks. Exercise physiology can help with range of motion and strength.

  • Elbow - Includes treatment for injury, discomfort and common conditions, such as golfers elbow and tennis elbow.

Lumbar and Pelvis

From mild discomfort through to chronic pain, see your exercise physiologist about appropriate treatment:

  • Osteoarthritis - OA commonly impacts the lumbar and pelvic region and exercise physiology can help manage this condition.

  • Pelvic Floor Deficiency - A relatively common condition where safe exercise programs have been proven to greatly assist.

  • Degeneration - Relieve pain and slow down the ongoing weakening or wasting of muscles caused by degeneration.

Lower Limb (Hip, Knee, Ankle, Foot)

Common lower limb health conditions our physiologists can assist you with include:

  • Osteoarthritis - Management and therapy for pain and discomfort caused to lower limbs by OA.

  • Muscle Sprains and Tears - Speed up your recovery from muscle sprains and tears and help prevent further injury in the future.

  • Hip/Knee Replacement Therapy - Post operation therapy to help strengthen crucial muscle groups and regain pain free movement and function.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN AN EXERCISE PHYSIOLOGIST AND A PERSONAL TRAINER?

Many people ask what is the difference between an exercise physiologist and a personal trainer in the gym. It's a great question and there are some very significant differences between the two, including:

  1. An exercise physiologist has undertaken at least 4 years of university education and a minimum 500 hours clinical experience compared to a personal trainer, who has usually done no more than a 6 month Certificate 4 course.

  2. An exercise physiologist can design a program for both healthy individuals and people with complex or chronic health issues. A personal trainer is best suited to design an exercise program for someone who is generally healthy and low risk.

  3. Exercise physiology is recognised by Health Funds, Medicare and other government agencies, whereas personal training is not recognised.

  4. Exercise physiology is a recognised allied health profession and each practitioner required accreditation with Exercise and Sport Science Australia (ESSA), the governing body. Personal trainers are not governed.

  5. An exercise physiologist has an in depth knowledge and understanding of anatomy, human physiology, biomechanics and disease process. A personal trainer course provides a limited understanding.

  6. An exercise physiologist provides an evidenced based approach that is customised to your specific circumstances, whereas a personal trainer will generally provide assessments and instruction based on a standard format.
