Can you claim Dietetics and Exercise Physiology on Medicare?

In our last post we discussed patient eligibility for a medicare rebate for Exercise Physiology services. This article will complete our three part Medicare series by exploring when you can make a Medicare claim after visiting a dietitian.  As mentioned previously, dietetics can help prevent, manage, mitigate and potentially cure many chronic conditions, illnesses and injuries. Your dietitian can also assist with lifestyle intervention for general health and well-being.

What Is Dietetics?   Dietetics applies an in depth understanding of the role of nutrition in a healthy lifestyle and in the prevention and treatment of disease and illness.  An accredited dietitian can help with much more than just advice for obtaining and maintaining a healthy weight. There are many other illnesses and conditions that can be treated and managed with the help of a dietitian. However, you don't need to be unwell to benefit from their advice and services. A nutritional plan from a dietary expert can be useful for preventing illness and promoting good health and fitness - we all know that prevention is better than cure. The role of a dietitian is very similar to the role of an exercise physiologist within the Medicare funded scheme. The overall health goal is the same, however the method of intervention is more related to education, guidance and lifestyle modification on the topic of nutrition. The following area can benefit from consulting with a dietitian under Medicare:

  • Obesity Management

  • Diabetes Management

  • Eating for Allergies and Intolerances

  • Irritable Bowel Syndrome

  • Nutrition for Cancer

  • Alzheimer's Disease

  • Heart Disease

  • Aged Care Nutrition

  • Diabetes Management

  • Renal Nutrition Therapy

  • Enteral Nutrition Therapy

  • Paediatric Health

If you currently have or feel you are at risk of needing assistance in relation to any of these areas dietetics may be appropriate for your situation. Dietetics can be used to prevent, manage and potentially cure the above issues and it is a cost effective self-managed method that is provided within our current healthcare system and you may be eligible for a Medicare rebate.
