DIETETICS AND MEDICARE - WHAT IS COVERED?

How Medicare funded Exercise Physiology and Dietetics can apply to you?

Last month we discussed patient eligibility in relation to a GP led care plan system for Exercise Physiology service. This months article will complete part three of our series and cover the service of Dietetics.  As mentioned previously these services both help prevent, manage, mitigate and potentially cure many chronic conditions, illness and injuries and also assist with lifestyle intervention and health and well-being.

What is Dietetics?

Dietetics applies an in depth understanding of the role of nutrition in a healthy lifestyle and the prevention and treatment of disease and illnesses.  A Dietitian can help with much more than just advice for obtaining and maintaining a healthy weight.

There are many other illnesses and conditions that can be treated and managed with the help of your Dietitian. However, you don't need to be unwell to benefit from their advice and services. A nutritional plan from a dietary expert can be useful for preventing illness and promoting good health and fitness.

The role of a Dietitian is very similar to the role of an EP within the Medicare-funded scheme. The goal is the same however the method of intervention is more related to education, guidance and lifestyle modification on the topic of nutrition. The following area can benefit from consulting with a Dietitian:

  • Obesity Management

  • Diabetes Management

  • Eating for Allergies and Intolerances

  • Irritable Bowel Syndrome

  • Nutrition for Cancer

  • Alzheimer's Disease

  • Heart Disease

  • Aged Care Nutrition

  • Diabetes Management

  • Renal Nutrition Therapy

  • Enteral Nutrition Therapy

  • Paediatric Health

If you currently have or feel you are at risk of needing assistance in relation to any of these areas dietetics may be appropriate for your situation. Dietetics can be used to prevent, manage and potentially cure these above areas and is a cost effective self managed method that is provided within our current healthcare system.
